Martial Arts Frequently Asked Questions

General Information

What age can my child start?

Our Little Dragons program begins at age four. Youth classes begin at age seven, and Teen & Adult classes begin at age thirteen. Students are grouped by age and developmental stage to ensure appropriate instruction and steady progress.

How long are classes?

Little Dragons classes are 30 minutes. Youth classes are 45 minutes. Teen & Adult classes are 60 minutes.

Do I need prior experience to start classes?

No prior experience is necessary. Our programs are designed to be beginner-friendly for all ages, from preschoolers to adults. We meet every student at their current fitness level and provide the step-by-step instruction needed to build a strong foundation in Shudokan Karate.

Is martial arts training safe for young children?

Safety is our primary focus. All classes are led by professional, background-checked instructors who prioritize controlled movements and proper technique.

What makes the Karate West curriculum different?

We use a character-first curriculum that builds respect, discipline, and responsibility into every lesson. Through karate training, students learn how to listen, focus, follow directions, and keep trying when something is challenging. Our goal is not only martial arts skill, but helping children develop the confidence and habits that support success in school and in life.

Trial & Enrollment

What should I wear to my first martial arts class?

We provide a Karate West uniform as part of the trial so you or your child can change and be ready before class begins. Please arrive 15 minutes early for your first class.

What happens during the two-week trial?

You or your child will attend regular classes, wear an official Karate West uniform, and experience the structure and expectations of our program firsthand. The trial allows families to
determine if the training environment is the right fit.

What happens after the trial ends?

At the end of the two-week trial, enrollment automatically converts to a month-to-month membership. If your child is enjoying classes, there is nothing you need to do. If you decide not to continue, simply contact us before the trial ends and we will cancel your membership without obligation.

Are there long-term contracts or hidden fees?

We believe in earning your trust every month. Karate West operates on a no-contract basis, allowing you to manage your training without the pressure of long-term commitments. You can cancel your membership at any time without facing hidden cancellation fees.

Scheduling & Locations

How often should a student attend classes?

Consistency is key to seeing progress in both character and physical skill. Most of our students attend two classes per week. For our Little Dragons, we recommend one session per week to match their developmental stage, while advanced students often add Saturday weapons training to their routine.

Can I change my schedule from one class per week to two?

Yes. Simply contact the office and we will be happy to update your schedule.

Are you open during school holidays such as spring, summer, and winter breaks?

Karate West remains open during spring and summer breaks. We close for a holiday break in December.

Where is the Karate West dojo located?

Our dojo is located in Issaquah at 1740 19th Ave NW. We have proudly served families across the Eastside Seattle region, including Bellevue and Sammamish, for more than 37 years. Free on site parking is available for all members and visitors.
