Shihan Randy Holeman – Co-Founder
7th Degree Black Belt, Shudokan Karate
Shihan Randy Holeman is the Co-Founder of Karate West and a 7th degree black belt in Shudokan Karate. Recognized with the esteemed title of Shihan – a Master Instructor, honoring both technical skill and leadership – he has dedicated more than four decades to training, teaching, and preserving the traditions of Japanese martial arts. Since co-founding Karate West in 1989, Shihan Holeman has guided students of all ages in Issaquah and the Eastside, helping them grow in discipline, resilience, and confidence.
His commitment to Karate West families extends far beyond teaching kicks and punches. Shihan Holeman sits on the board of the American Shudokan Scholarship Fund that supports students who achieve the rank of Karate West black belt. The merit-based fund recognizes the years of commitment, perseverance, and hard work it takes to earn a black belt, while also encouraging students to pursue their academic goals. To date, it has helped hundreds of Karate West graduates continue their education, awarding over $400,000 in financial support – a lasting reflection of Shihan Holeman’s belief that karate builds not only strong martial artists, but also strong futures.
Sensei Jan Stockton
Co-Founder
3rd Degree Black Belt, Shudokan Karate
Since co-founding Karate West 36 years ago, Sensei Jan Stockton has been the creative force behind many of the school’s signature children’s programs. With her tireless enthusiasm and love for kids – both as an instructor and as the leader of program development – she has introduced programs such as Tiny Tigers, Little Dragons, Youth Demo Teams, Summer Camps, and Parents’ Night Out.
Over the years, her passion and dedication have shaped programs that continue to influence generations of families throughout Issaquah and the Eastside. At the heart of all her work is a belief that children learn best when they are engaged and having fun. That’s why the programs combine traditional karate training with creativity, energy, and encouragement – making every class an experience kids look forward to.
In January 2022, Sensei Jan expanded her reach by founding Great Start Karate, an innovative, online karate program for kids designed for families seeking flexible options – from homeschool karate classes online to convenient at-home martial arts training. Drawing on decades of experience, she created her online karate program for kids to make martial arts accessible to kids in the U.S., Canada, and beyond.
