It’s the beginning of the year, and that means many people are setting resolutions for what they’d like to accomplish before the next December 31st. Some estimates say that as many as 40% of Americans set these resolutions, but the majority will never be kept. One statistic notes that as little as 8 percent of people are actually successful in attaining their goals, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth pursuing!
The month of January at Karate West is focused on Goal Setting because we believe that with the right steps, any goal can be attained. By following the 5 Rules of Goal Setting, you will have a clear view of what you wish to accomplish and will have a better chance at seeing those goals through to their completion. Here are what the 5 rules are and why each one is so vital to meeting your goals.
- Set Goals that motivate you
A goal should be something that you want to accomplish, not something that someone else wants you to do. You should feel a personal drive to meet your goals or it’s likely that you won’t have sufficient determination to see it to the end. Only when the reward of a goal properly excites you do you know that it is the right one for you.
- Set SMART goals
Specific: Have a clear idea of what your goal is. Goal setting that is too vague or too broad will quickly become unobtainable.
Measurable: Have some way of determining progress toward your goal. You should be able to know when you have achieved it.
Attainable: Don’t aim for the impossible. Make sure that the goal you set is actually something you’re able to accomplish.
Relevant: Is your goal something that will positively affect your life? If not, you may want to reconsider it until the benefits have wider results.
Time-Bound: Make sure that your goal is something that can be achieved within a reasonable amount of time.
- Put Your Goals in Writing
When you put your goals into writing, it forces you to more precisely outline what you need to accomplish and what it will take to get there. It also puts your goal in a place that can visually remind you of its status, providing you with even further motivation to find success.
- Make an Action Plan, Set a Time Frame
As part of rule #2, you should have set a goal that can be accomplished within a specific amount of time, but make sure that you establish what that time frame is. Also, set out the steps that you will need to take in order to regularly make progress.
- Stick with It
Probably one of the most important rules of all is to simple not let yourself give up. If you’ve followed all of the other rules, this one will be easier, but it still requires that you remain focused and motivated. With the right attitude, you’ll soon conquer your goal and be moving onto the next!
